Sacraments

At Holy Family Catholic Church, we believe the Sacraments are beautiful encounters with God’s grace throughout every season of life. Instituted by Christ and entrusted to His Church, the Seven Sacraments help guide, strengthen, heal, and nourish us on our faith journey. Through them, we are drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus and one another as members of His Church.

As a loving and joy-filled Catholic community of faith, Holy Family is dedicated to helping people grow closer to Christ and live the Gospel in everyday life. The Sacraments are at the heart of that mission — strengthening us through prayer, worship, education, and service as we seek to build God’s kingdom together.

Whether you are preparing for a sacrament for the very first time, returning to the Church after many years, or walking alongside a loved one in celebration, we are honored to journey with you. Our hope is that every person who comes to Holy Family feels welcomed, supported, and encouraged as they grow in faith and encounter the love of Christ through the life of the Church.

As Catholics, we recognize the Sacraments not simply as traditions or milestones, but as living moments where God meets us with His mercy, healing, strength, and joy. They remind us that we never walk alone — Christ is continually present, calling us closer to Him and calling us outward to serve others with love and compassion.

“Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”
— Psalm 34:8

We invite you to explore the Sacraments and learn more about how God desires to work in your life through them.

Sacrament of Baptism

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” -Romans 6:3-4

Celebrating Baptism

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the church and made sharers in her mission.” (CCC 1213)

Baptism Preparation for Infants

When parents present their child for Baptism, they are embracing the beautiful responsibility of raising their child in the Catholic faith. As a parish family, we are here to support and encourage you in that journey.

To help parents prepare for this important step, we ask that families be registered parishioners of Holy Family and attend a Baptism preparation class before scheduling their child’s Baptism.

For more information about baptizing your infant or young child, please contact Carol Guthard at 615.373.4696 or [email protected]

Baptism Preparation for Children

Children who have reached catechetical age and have not yet been baptized are prepared through our Religious Education program. Our team works closely with families to help children understand and joyfully receive the Sacrament.

For more information, please contact [email protected]

Adult Baptism (OCIA)

Adults seeking Baptism, as well as those interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, are invited to journey through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). This process offers prayer, learning, community, and spiritual formation as individuals prepare to receive the Sacraments.

To learn more about OCIA, please contact Janis Lovecchio at [email protected]

Baptismal Certificates & Sponsor Letters

If you need a copy of a Baptismal Certificate or require a sponsor letter for Baptism at another parish, please contact Carol Guthard at 615-373-4696. When requesting a sponsor letter, please have the child’s full name available.

Sacrament of the Eucharist

“Jesus said to them, ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” – John 6:52-56

Celebrating the Eucharist

“At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet ‘in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us. The Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.” (CCC 1323-24)

Preparation for First Eucharist:

This is a wonderful and special time for children and their families. Children are prepared through the Religious Education program beginning in 1st grade. Students will receive the First Communion in 2nd grade. Students who have been baptized but missed receiving the Sacrament in 2nd grade may register for a make-up class. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

“If we say, “We are without sin,” we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.” –1 John 1:8-9

Seeking Forgiveness - Reconciliation

“The Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation is one of the Sacraments of Healing. It relies upon a sense of ongoing conversion, a desire to repent, and a need to be reconciled with God and the Church. It is called the sacrament of forgiveness since by the priest’s sacramental absolution God grants the penitent ‘pardon and peace.’” (CCC 1424)

First Reconciliation & The Sacrament of Reconciliation

At Holy Family Catholic Church, preparing for First Reconciliation is a beautiful milestone in the life of a child and family. We are honored to partner with parents as children begin to better understand God’s mercy, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

Children enrolled in our Religious Education program begin preparation for First Reconciliation in 1st grade and receive the Sacrament during 2nd grade. Through prayer, learning, and the support of our parish community, we hope each child comes to experience the peace and joy found in God’s grace.

If your child is in need of preparation for First Reconciliation, please contact [email protected] for more information.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a gift of healing and renewal for all Catholics — an opportunity to encounter Christ’s mercy and begin again with a renewed heart.

Confession is offered weekly:

Saturdays from 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Wednesdays from 5:45–6:15 p.m.

Reconciliation takes place in the reconciliation room located to the left of the Baptismal font in the Sanctuary.  Appointments may also be scheduled by calling the church office at 615-373-4696.

In addition, Holy Family offers Parish Reconciliation Services during the seasons of Advent and Lent as a time of communal prayer, reflection, and spiritual preparation.

Sacrament of Confirmation

“Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 8:14-17

Celebrating Confirmation

“For by the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.” (CCC 1285)

Confirmation

At Holy Family Catholic Church, the Sacrament of Confirmation is a joyful and meaningful step in a young person’s faith journey. Through Confirmation, individuals are strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and called to more fully live as disciples of Jesus Christ — sharing their faith through prayer, worship, service, and everyday witness.

Confirmation Preparation for Youth

Students enrolled in our Religious Education program begin preparing for Confirmation in 7th grade and receive the Sacrament at the end of their 8th grade year. Throughout the preparation process, our hope is to help students grow in their relationship with Christ, deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith, and recognize their important role within the life of the Church.

A make-up class is also available for students who may have missed receiving the Sacrament in 8th grade.

For more information about youth Confirmation preparation, please contact [email protected]

Confirmation Preparation for Adults

Adults who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation are warmly invited to continue their faith journey through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).

For more information about Adult Confirmation or OCIA, please contact Janis Lovecchio at [email protected]

Sacrament of Matrimony

But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother [and be joined to his wife], and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” – Mark 10:6-9

Celebrating Matrimony

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.” (CCC 1601)

At Holy Family Catholic Church, we believe marriage is more than a single day or celebration — it is a sacred covenant and lifelong vocation rooted in God’s love. Through the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, a man and woman are united in Christ and called to reflect His love through faith, commitment, sacrifice, joy, and family life.

We are honored to walk alongside couples as they prepare for this beautiful vocation and begin building a Christ-centered marriage grounded in prayer, worship, service, and the living of the Gospel.

Preparing for Marriage

Marriage preparation at Holy Family is designed to thoughtfully support and strengthen your relationship as you prepare for life together. Through prayer, conversation, reflection, and pre-Cana preparation, couples explore the essential foundations of Catholic marriage — communication, faith, commitment, and the shared call to holiness.

To allow adequate time for spiritual and practical preparation, couples are asked to connect with one of our priests or deacons at least six (6) months before their desired wedding date.

Your wedding day is not only a joyful celebration for you and your families, but also a sacred moment for our parish community.  As a Church family, we rejoice in the witness of your love and the beginning of your life together in Christ.

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

“Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” – James 5: 14-15

Needing Annointing

“The Anointing of the Sick completes our conformity to the death and Resurrection of Christ, just as Baptism began it. It completes the holy anointings that mark the whole Christian life…This last anointing fortifies the end of our earthly life like a solid rampart for the final struggles before entering the Father’s house.” (CCC 1523)

Anointing of the Sick

At Holy Family Catholic Church, we believe the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a beautiful expression of Christ’s healing presence and compassionate love. Through this sacrament, the Church prays for spiritual strength, peace, comfort, and healing for those who are experiencing illness, preparing for surgery, facing the challenges of aging, or nearing the end of life.

The Anointing of the Sick is not only for the final moments of life. Rather, it is a sacrament of hope and grace meant to bring God’s comfort and strength during times of serious illness or physical suffering. Through the prayers of the Church and the anointing with blessed oil by a priest, Christ draws near to the sick with His mercy, healing, and peace.

Whenever possible, we encourage parishioners to receive the sacrament before hospitalization or major surgery rather than waiting for an emergency situation. The sacrament may be received more than once if a person’s condition worsens or if they experience another serious illness.

As a parish family, we are honored to walk alongside individuals and families during these sacred and vulnerable moments with prayer, care, and compassion.

Sacrament of Holy Orders

“And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message…” –Mark 3:14

Vocation to the Priesthood or Diaconate

“Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles is exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. It includes three degrees: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate.” (CCC 1536)

Vocations: Priesthood & Diaconate

At Holy Family Catholic Church, we believe God continues to call men and women to serve His Church in unique and beautiful ways. A vocation to the priesthood or diaconate is a special calling rooted in prayer, service, compassion, and a desire to help lead others closer to Christ.

As a parish family, we are committed to praying for vocations and encouraging those who may feel called to explore where God is leading them. Discerning a vocation is a journey — one that unfolds through prayer, conversation, and openness to the Holy Spirit.

If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or diaconate, or would simply like to begin a conversation about vocational discernment, we encourage you to reach out.
